Release Info : Burgeoning UK leftfield label Resonant debuts yet another artist - and once again, Olvis is Icelandic; their fourth musician from those shores. Following the electronic forays of Borko and Sk/um, and more recently the much-lauded digital post-rock soundscapes of Stafrann Hakon, Olvis' music inhabits a more easily-defined territory, concentrating almost solely on warm, engaging guitar-based instrumental pieces - very accessible but without being generic or staid in any way. The first release of 25 year-old Orlygur Thor Orlygsson, this also features contributions from several leading lights on the vibrant Reykjavik music scene, but the album is essentially the work of one man; all written, recorded and played by Orlygur, with drums and synth added by his guests.

Reviews : Another Icelandic dreamer, Olvis is 25-year-old Reykjavik-based musician Orlygur Thor Orlygsson. With tiny traces of Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine and Stars Of The Lid, Olvis scores soul-scraping sorrow using weeping guitars and tender keyboard and piano. Most appealing however, is the way he wraps heavy breaths and remote murmurs up as just another instrument - a little like Elizabeth Fraser - rather than the voice providing the narrative by which the song is driven. Despite lacking anything approaching that killer change of pace over these 11 tracks, the throbbing ambience of highlights ‘The Sea’ and ‘Waterfall’ make that almost anirrelevance. Increasingly revealed on repeated plays, Olvis’ Icelandic dreams are - for the most part - an ear-opening discovery. COMES WITH A SMILE The Resonant label seems to be fast making a name for itself as one of the most consistant leftfield / acoustic hybrid labels working in the UK today. Following on from excellent debuts by Borko, Stafrann Hakon and Sk/Um, Resonant look towards the unusual climes of Iceland once again for another fine discovery – Olvis. The music here inhabitsmore familiar territory, concentrating almost solely on warm, engaging guitar-based instrumental pieces - hugely accessible but without being generic or staid in any way. The first release of 25 year-old Orlygur Thor Orlygsson, this also features contributions from several leading lights on the vibrant Reykjavik music scene, but the album is essentially the work of one man; all written, recorded and played by Orlygur, with drums and synth added by his guests. There is a serene, twilight quality to “Olvis” that makes itself familiar from the first listen onwards – a cinematic glide of tracks will no doubt work its way onto adverts and countless film scores once discovered by the “right” people. In the meantime, keep it close to your chest. Wonderful. BOOMKAT |
